January 22, 2013.

My son Jeffrey is 4 now. I took him to day care this AM and he had some good ones.

It was cold this morning when he was getting ready, so he decided he needed to wear two pair of socks. Kids, like adults, have whims and often its OK to go with them.

However, half way to day care (school) Jeffrey started taking off his extra socks---leaving me to put his shoes on--again. This is a skill he has yet to master.

I asked him why he was taking one pair of socks off and he said: "Well, I thought it was a good idea. But it wasn't."

This was all the information he gave me. Maybe his feet were too hot. Maybe his shoes were too tight. Either way, he learned that sometimes our good ideas are not really good ideas. Adults should know all about that.

I hope your ideas today are good ones. And I hope if they turn out not to be that you don't beat yourself up about it. This is how we learn. If you have children I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy mine. Have a blessed day.

Driving my son to day care this morning as mom was sick, Jeffrey asks me: "What makes the clouds move daddy?"
We were parked on an incline outside his "school" I was looking up through the windshield. He was looking up through my sunroof. " What makes the clouds move daddy?"
The clouds were moving pretty swiftly. The sun trying to break into a new dawn.
Without reall giving it any thought, I said. "God makes the clouds move with his breath." I told him (with as much animation as I could muster) when God wants the clouds to move slowly he blows like this. And then I blew really slowly for him to demonstrate. His eyes got as big as saucers. "Then," I said, "when he wants them to go fast he blows like this :", and then I blew real hard and long. Jeffrey started blowing with me.
I said, "Now do you understand how the clouds move Jeffrey?". He said, "Yeah, I do! God & Jesus make the clouds move."
I said, "Yeah Jeffrey, God & Jesus."
Raising children is a living, breathing, ever changing challenge and adventure. I know it's incredibly hard at times. But sometimes I feel I was made to do this. What an honor...

Federal Government and the American Home

I heard on NPR this morning about the battle going on in DC in regards to the budget. Currently as taxpayers we have been signing off on legislation that allocates about 1/3 more to our budget going out than we have coming in. Certainly somethings gone awry.

I know people that are spending more than they make. I’ve seen it as high as, ironically about 20-30% more than they are bringing in. Maybe we’re just use to it. By the way, the more educated they are the higher the debt. It seems when we start making money in our 40’s that we begin to get a little spend crazy. (Don’t worry they are getting it under control.)

I think we need to get back to a culture of frugality instead of materialism. Turn off home improvements and house flipper and read an article about saving for a rainy day or juniors college fund. And if you’re not a reader, there are a few financial shows out there that may provide better “food” for your soul than going to the mall and window shopping.
As a country I think we can turn this thing around. I really do, but I think we need to start at the house… at the kitchen table. We need to evaluate, communicate, and just get real with the cash flow. Hey, it might even save you from divorce down the road. Isn’t financial stress still the leading cause of divorce?

These are tough times. I wouldn’t call them perilous, but they are tough. I hope and pray that we don’t make them perilous by not making the best decisions that are the best for the long term prosperity of our nation, and our humble homes. God Bless.

Leanring Curve

Who is it, Goethe, that said, "I find the interesting thin in life is not where we stand, but in which direction we are headed"? I am still learning the whole blogging process. As with much of life it is both difficult and fun.

(The photo above is Karen and Ireland on Norris Lake, TN. The water is really that clear.) We keep "Friends", our 24 ft. Cuddy at Sequoyah Marina on the Anderson County side of Norris. If you can't reach me at work during the summer now you know why. If you contact Sequoyah about one of their houseboat rentals ask for Jim, and tell him Jeff Headrick sent you.

Here is a link to their site. http://www.sequoyahmarina.net/index.html

First Blog: A Day in the Life

As a professional financial advisor, the last 6 months have been the extreme in bear market battle. However, our firm has done well, and we feel that considering the circumstances given we couldn't have done a whole lot better.

That being said their were still many things learned. Still many things that can be improved. Tweaked. With the Dow at 14,000+ 17 months ago, 6,600 three weeks ago, and about 7,700 on April 1, 2009, we had better keep our eye on the ball. We will.

On a personal note the birth of my son has caused a ground swell of it's own. So much more important than money. I'll write more in the near term. I hope that my first delve into this arena (blogging) bodes well.
